Elsie Edna Charlotte (Radunz) Edlund

Elsie Edna Charlotte (Radunz) Edlund, age 91, of Bowie, MD, formerly of Dassel, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at the Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, MD.

She was born Oct. 9, 1917, in rural Darwin, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Kohlmyre) Radunz. Elsie attended district school in Ellsworth Township.

A baptized born again believer, Elsie attended the Church of Christ in Dassel during the years she made her home there.

She was united in marriage to Willard Roland Edlund June 5, 1948, in Darwin.

They made their home in Kandiyohi for 16 years, before moving to Little Falls, where they built and managed Lake Beauty Covenant Bible Camp, serving the Lord there until Willard’s death Nov. 7, 1975.

Elsie returned to the Dassel area in 1978, where she enjoyed renewing old friendships and making new ones. In 1993, she moved to Maryland to live with her youngest daughter, Jacki, and her family. In 2004, she moved to Bowie, MD to live with her eldest daughter and husband.

Elsie was selected as Meeker County Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1988, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to serving others in both the community and her church.

She loved children and teaching them about the love of Jesus, and taught Sunday school throughout her adult years, well into her 70s.

An avid sports fan, Elsie especially enjoyed following the Minnesota Gophers and the Baltimore Orioles.

She loved to spend time with her family, and enjoyed the years that she helped care for her grandchildren.

Elsie also enjoyed traveling throughout the US, and in her later years, travelled abroad to visit family and sights in France and Switzerland. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Elsie is survived by her children, Gayla (Steve) Schmerbeck of Bowie, MD, Thomas (Gloria Cox) Edlund of Owatonna, and Jacqueline (Ronald) Braun of White Plains, MD; six grandchildren, Philip (Nandini Bagchee) Schmerbeck of Brooklyn, NY, Patricia Schmerbeck of Houston, TX, Erik and Ingrid Braun of White Plains, MD, Allen (Cathy) Cox of Owatonna, and Dawn (Darin) Hanneman of Owatonna; and three great-grandchildren, Tony and Katelyn Hanneman and Melissa Cox, all of Owatonna.

In addition to her husband, Willard, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Frank Radunz, Ernest Radunz, Lucille Ahlgren, Louise Osberg, and Henry Radunz.

A funeral service took place Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Dassel with Pastor Billy Wallace officiating. Interment followed at the Dassel Cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, Nov. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
